Abstract

This study examines the main aspects of transition to democracy and aims to identify and assess the subject matter’s essence and significance. The issue of democratic transition, its waives, and seatbacks have now become an essential topic of research for political science. Moreover, transition to democracy has also been a practical issue in many countries across the world in the form of transitioning towards strengthening democracy or in the shape of removing dictators and taking initiatives towards establishing democratic systems.  In other cases, studies have focused on the seatbacks suffered by transition to democracy. Building on these, this study aims to engender a general debate over all aspects of transition to democracy through an analysis of the conceptual, theoretical, and procedural frameworks of the democratic process and its transitional trait. In the same context, the study attempts to examine the causes of a successful transition to democracy. The study concludes that transition to democracy represent the first steps within a multi-stage and multi- dimensional process.  The study argues that transition to democracy could be only formal-procedural and thus could entail the risk of a retreat towards tyranny again. The transition, however,  could be a real one and could involve enhancing democratic principles while stressing the need for both domestic preparation and external support.
