Rentier Economy; a one-structure economy that is solely reliant on a single source of income. Rent as an economic phenomenon is the income that is regularly supplied through individuals, corporations, or foreign governments to satisfy the interest of an individual, a group, or a state government. Rent here is a significant revenue without any notable intellectual, material, or physical effort, and it does not require institutional development or operational frameworks. Instead, it depends on already available natural revenues within the state, such as oil, gas, and precious gems.
The oil sector and oil revenues in Iraq constitute more than 90% of the country's export value. This means that Iraq's economy is a rentier economy. This study sheds light on the relationship between the rentier economy and Iraqi national identity since 2003. It presumes the rentier (oil-based) economy to have a negative impact on such an identity. The study reached several conclusions, among which is a direct correlation between corruption and oil rent revenues, as well as higher poverty and unemployment rates. Furthermore, these revenues have been a main factor in shaping a one-dimensional sectarian identity for Iraq.
