Abstract

This research adopts an analytical-descriptive methodology to explore Regional Security Complex Theory as an effective framework for understanding the security dynamics of the Middle East. It specifically analyzes the implications of ISIS’s emergence as a transnational threat on the foundations of the region’s security architecture. The study argues that Iraq occupies a strategically significant geopolitical position within the Middle Eastern security complex and, following the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s regime, has become a critical arena for the intersection of regional and international interests. The findings reveal that Iraq’s successful strategy against ISIS (2014–2024) was the result of a balanced integration of military operations, non-military approaches, and coordinated efforts across domestic, regional, and international alliances. Accordingly, the study underscores the importance of a comprehensive understanding of regional security dynamics and highlights the necessity of employing multidimensional security mechanisms to address transnational threats. ISIS has fundamentally altered patterns of alliance and rivalry among regional states, giving rise to new configurations of cooperation at the local, regional, and global levels.
