Abstract
This research examines the role of regional powers in the democratic transition process in Iraq since 2003, the year of the overthrow of the former regime. The study highlights how regional powers have influenced political, social, and economic stability in Iraq through political, military, and economic interventions.
The research begins by analyzing the internal factors that contributed to the start of the democratic transition, such as the establishment of new political institutions, holding elections, and the development of human rights. However, it particularly focuses on the role of regional powers in supporting or undermining this process. Regional powers (such as Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Syria) are key players in shaping Iraq's political landscape.
The research also discusses the role of certain regional powers in supporting political stability in Iraq, such as Iran’s support for the Iraqi government, and the impact of Arab support in attempting to strengthen the democratic process. On the other hand, the research presents the challenges posed by negative interventions from some regional powers, such as attempts by certain powers to undermine the Iraqi government by supporting armed groups, security threats across borders, particularly through terrorist groups like ISIS. It also examines the effects of Iranian and Turkish interventions in Iraq’s internal affairs, especially regarding the relationship between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan region, which has complicated the democratic transition process.
The study concludes that regional intervention has played a crucial role in both the successes and failures of Iraq's democratic transition. In some cases, regional support and intervention have contributed to the building of democratic institutions and political stability, while in other instances; such intervention has deepened sectarian and ethnic divisions and increased internal tensions in Iraq.
