Abstract

This study aims to examine the future of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region from a security perspective. The importance of this issue is that the Kurdistan Region is a strong, unique entity, has a strong presence in the political theater, and influences the direction of events in Iraq and the region. Therefore, this study attempts to unveil the future of security in the Kurdistan Region, because the Region at a high level from the perspective of security, formulates its vision, relations, policies and strategies, and acts. The strengths and weaknesses of the Region's security will affect the political equations, balance of power, and threats at the local and regional levels. The study depends on the Copenhagen School, especially the Barry Buzan perspective, which takes security out of its narrow meaning and into a broader meaning. This study also used descriptive, and qualitative methods. And, it mainly raises the following questions: Where is the future of regional security headed? What are the most important security aspects that play a role in determining the future of the region? This study concluded that the future of security in the Kurdistan Region is uncertain because the Kurdistan Region itself is divided and there is no supreme authority. The challenges to the security of the Kurdistan Region more than opportunities. The division of power between the two parties (PDK and PUK) and the existence of two zones, two party armed forces, the biggest threat to the survival, stability and security of the Region. The study recommends that both ruling parties should sacrifice their party interests in order to ensure the Region's strategic interests and security.
