Sports cannot be practiced in the modern era without the existence of technical regulations, and these regulations cannot be implemented without an individual who applies these laws—the match referee. Consequently, conducting a match is contingent upon the presence of a match referee. The match referee does not undertake this responsibility without appointment by others; therefore, the referee's management of the game is based on a contractual relationship between the referee and the match organizer. This relationship constitutes a contractual bond that connects them.
Given the similarity between the work of a match referee and that of a judge in a court—both involving the application of laws to events occurring within their respective domains—the match referee must maintain complete independence and impartiality to make sound decisions. Accordingly, we have characterized the contractual relationship between the match referee and match organizer as a contract of work (independent contractor agreement), considering the contractor's (match referee's) autonomy in performing the assigned duties. This characterization results in several legal implications for both parties to the contract: the match referee and the match organizer.
This research examines the nature of the match referee contract in the field of play, its characteristics and features, and its legal classification: whether it constitutes an employment contract or an independent contractor agreement. Ultimately, the research addresses the most significant legal consequences arising from the contract between the match referee and match organizer, concluding with final remarks.
